A refined ink wash study by Mei Qing, featuring a gnarled tree and a solitary figure in a boat, executed in the traditional literati style.
This work belongs to a series of leaves by the Anhui school painter Mei Qing. The composition demonstrates the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques, where the economy of line defines the form of a gnarled tree extending over a rocky outcrop. A small figure in a boat sits quietly below, providing a sense of scale and stillness to the scene. The brushwork is deliberate, using varied pressure to suggest the texture of bark and the jagged edges of stone.
Mei Qing was a member of the Huangshan school, a group of artists who drew inspiration from the dramatic peaks of the Yellow Mountains. His approach to the brush is characterised by a balance between descriptive detail and calligraphic abstraction. The inclusion of poetic inscription and red seals is a standard feature of the literati tradition, where the visual image and the written word function as a single unit of expression. The negative space, or void, is as important as the ink itself, creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation.
This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink on paper. The composition relies on the interplay between the heavy, textured trunk of the tree and the lighter, more fluid strokes used for the distant clouds and the water. It is an example of the scholar-painter's aesthetic, which prioritised personal expression and technical control over literal representation. The work invites the viewer to observe the relationship between the natural elements and the human presence within the frame. By focusing on the essential qualities of the subject, Mei Qing creates a scene that feels both specific and timeless.
