A classic ink wash painting by Mei Qing, depicting a mountainous scene with a waterfall and scholarly retreat, rendered in the style of the Huangshan School.
Mei Qing, a prominent figure of the Huangshan School during the early Qing Dynasty, produced this work as part of a series reflecting his engagement with historical artistic traditions. The composition demonstrates the characteristic ink wash technique, where tonal variations in ink create depth and atmosphere without the use of colour. The scene depicts a mountainous terrain, featuring a waterfall cascading down a cliff face, which serves as the visual anchor for the surrounding foliage and rocky outcrops.
In the foreground, small figures traverse a bridge, providing a sense of scale against the vast natural environment. A small structure sits perched on a rocky ledge, suggesting a retreat for contemplation or scholarly pursuit. The brushwork is deliberate, employing dry and wet ink applications to define the textures of the trees and the rugged surface of the mountains. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left quadrant integrates the written word with the visual image, a common practice in Chinese literati painting that adds a layer of poetic context to the scene.
Mei Qing was known for his depictions of the Huangshan mountains, and this piece captures the spirit of that region through a stylistic lens informed by earlier masters. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the rhythmic flow of the ink and the balance between positive and negative space. The paper support retains a neutral, aged tone, which complements the monochromatic palette. This print offers a clear view of the artist's control over ink density, from the dark, concentrated strokes of the trees to the lighter, diluted washes that define the distant peaks and the mist surrounding the waterfall.
