Landscapes after Old Masters - Dai Xi

A series of four vertical ink wash scrolls by Dai Xi, demonstrating the refined brushwork and atmospheric depth of the Qing Dynasty literati tradition.

Dai Xi, a prominent painter and official during the late Qing Dynasty, produced this series of vertical hanging scrolls in the tradition of shan shui, or mountain-water painting. These works demonstrate his technical mastery of ink wash and brushwork, reflecting the scholarly pursuit of emulating the styles of earlier masters. The compositions follow the classical format of vertical scrolls, where the viewer is invited to travel through the scene from the foreground, featuring detailed trees and rocky outcrops, to the distant, mist-covered peaks.

Each panel exhibits a distinct approach to texture and form. The brushwork is precise, utilising varied line weights to define the craggy surfaces of the mountains and the delicate structure of the foliage. The use of ink wash creates a sense of atmospheric depth, with lighter tones suggesting distance and heavier, darker applications grounding the foreground elements.
