A detailed etching by Anthonie Waterloo depicting the biblical figures of Tobias and the angel within a dense, atmospheric forest.
Anthonie Waterloo was a prominent Dutch etcher and painter, known for his focus on wooded scenery and natural motifs. In this etching, he depicts the biblical narrative of Tobias and the Angel within a dense, atmospheric forest setting. The composition is structured around a framing device of large, gnarled trees that guide the eye toward a distant, sunlit valley. The figures of Tobias and the angel are small, positioned on a rocky outcrop, allowing the surrounding environment to dominate the visual field.
Waterloo employs a sophisticated range of etching techniques to differentiate textures. The rough, vertical faces of the rocks contrast with the delicate, flickering foliage of the trees. His use of line weight creates a sense of depth, moving from the dark, heavy foreground to the lighter, more ethereal background. The inclusion of a small waterfall and a distant village adds narrative detail to the scene, grounding the biblical subject in a recognisably Dutch interpretation of nature.
This work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in the natural world as a subject in its own right, rather than merely a backdrop for human activity. Waterloo avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to capture the structural qualities of the woods. The etching demonstrates his technical skill in managing light and shadow through cross-hatching and varied line density. By placing the figures in a subordinate position, he emphasises the scale and presence of the natural world. This print is a characteristic example of his output, which was widely collected during his lifetime and influenced subsequent generations of printmakers interested in the depiction of trees and rural environments.
