An eighteenth-century Italian etching depicting a pastoral scene with a shepherd and flock, after a design by Marco Ricci.
This etching by Giuliano Giampiccoli captures a pastoral scene, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the mid-eighteenth century. Giampiccoli, a Venetian engraver, often translated the works of contemporary painters into print, and this composition bears the mark of Marco Ricci, whose influence is noted in the lower margin. The scene depicts a rural path where a shepherd guides a small flock of sheep past a stream and towards a distant settlement.
The technical execution relies on varied line weights to define the textures of the gnarled trees, the rocky terrain, and the soft foliage. The foreground features a fallen log and two figures resting, which provides a sense of scale and human presence within the wider environment. The middle ground opens up to a body of water, leading the eye toward the horizon where architectural forms are visible against the sky.
Giampiccoli employs cross-hatching and stippling to create depth and shadow, particularly within the dense canopy of the trees and the shaded banks of the stream. The composition follows the conventions of the period, balancing the organic, irregular shapes of nature with the structured placement of figures. This print serves as a record of the printmaking techniques used in Venice during the eighteenth century, where the reproduction of paintings was a primary method for disseminating artistic styles across Europe. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the fine lines and tonal variations of the original copperplate etching.
