A moody, expressionist depiction of the Belgian countryside by Constant Permeke, featuring heavy brushwork and a warm, atmospheric sky.
Constant Permeke, a central figure in the development of Flemish Expressionism, produced this work during a period when his focus shifted toward the rural life of the Belgian coast. The painting captures the heavy, atmospheric quality of the countryside, where the earth and sky seem to merge under a thick, textured application of paint. Permeke often utilised a sombre palette to convey the physical weight of the land and the labour associated with it.
In this composition, the haystacks serve as geometric anchors within the broader, fluid expanse of the fields. The brushwork is deliberate and forceful, reflecting the artist's preference for tactile surfaces over fine detail. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, rendered in lighter, warmer tones that contrast with the darker, earthy hues of the foreground. This play between light and shadow creates a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. The horizon line is low, allowing the expansive sky to dominate the viewer's perception of the scene.
Permeke spent much of his career in the village of Jabbeke, where he observed the daily rhythms of agricultural life. His approach to painting was less about capturing a fleeting moment and more about expressing the permanent, grounded nature of the rural environment. The forms are simplified, almost sculptural, which is a hallmark of his mature style. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he directs attention to the raw materiality of the paint and the elemental character of the terrain. This print reproduces the original impasto and tonal variations, offering a clear view of the artist's technique and his interpretation of the Belgian rural environment.
