A classic Ming Dynasty ink wash painting by Dai Jin, depicting Daoist immortals playing weiqi beneath a pine tree.
This work by Dai Jin, a founder of the Zhe School during the early Ming Dynasty, depicts a scene of Daoist immortals engaged in a game of weiqi. The composition is anchored by a large, gnarled pine tree that dominates the left side of the frame, its textured bark and needle-laden branches rendered with precise brushwork. Beneath the shelter of this tree, the figures sit on a rocky outcrop, their robes flowing in soft, controlled lines that contrast with the rugged, vertical forms of the cliff face behind them.
Dai Jin was known for his technical skill in reviving the styles of the Southern Song masters, particularly in his handling of ink wash and structural composition. The background remains largely open, suggesting a vast, misty atmosphere that provides a sense of quietude. The figures are painted with a focus on their posture and the concentration required for their game, while the surrounding environment is treated with a balance of detail and suggestion. The use of ink on silk allows for subtle gradations of tone, creating a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective that is characteristic of the period's approach to nature and human activity.
This piece reflects the broader cultural interest in Daoist themes, where the pursuit of leisure and intellectual games in a secluded, natural setting was a common subject for literati and professional painters alike. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate human subjects into a larger, more imposing natural environment, maintaining a harmony between the two. The muted palette, dominated by ink tones and the aged colour of the silk, contributes to the overall sense of timelessness and contemplation inherent in the subject matter.
