A refined etching by Alphonse Legros, depicting a quiet river scene with a boat and figures, executed with precise cross-hatching and tonal control.
Alphonse Legros, a French artist who spent much of his career in London, produced a significant body of graphic work that favoured traditional techniques over the emerging trends of his era. This etching demonstrates his command of the needle and acid, employing a disciplined system of cross-hatching to define form and atmosphere. The composition is structured around a horizontal axis, with a small boat carrying four figures moving across the foreground water. The middle ground rises into a gentle slope, topped by a cluster of modest buildings and dense foliage.
Legros avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the grassy banks and the surface of the water. His approach to the medium is restrained, reflecting an interest in the technical rigour of the Old Masters rather than the rapid, impressionistic marks popularised by his contemporaries. The figures in the boat are rendered with economy, their presence providing a sense of scale to the quiet, rural setting. The print exhibits the characteristic plate mark of a hand-pulled etching, with the artist's signature visible in the lower right corner. This work is representative of the artist's dedication to the printmaking medium, which he taught during his tenure at the Slade School of Fine Art. It offers a glimpse into the sombre, contemplative mood that often permeated his depictions of the natural world, prioritising structural integrity and tonal balance over decorative flourish.
