A circular etching by Jean Morin depicting a traveller resting in a quiet, rural setting, rendered with fine hatching and atmospheric detail.
This circular etching by Jean Morin captures a quiet, rural scene typical of seventeenth-century French printmaking. Morin, a skilled engraver and painter active in Paris, often produced works that combined precise technical execution with a sense of atmospheric calm. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a format that draws the eye toward the centre while allowing the surrounding foliage and sky to recede naturally.
In the foreground, a traveller rests with a dog near a weathered tree stump. This figure provides a sense of scale, grounding the viewer in the scene before the eye travels across the rolling terrain toward a small cluster of buildings in the distance. Smoke rises from a chimney, suggesting human activity within the quiet countryside. The artist employs varied line weights to distinguish between the textures of the rough bark, the soft grass, and the distant, hazy trees. The sky is rendered with fine, horizontal hatching, which creates a sense of depth and light without overwhelming the delicate details of the terrain below.
Morin was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the medium of etching. His work often reflects the influence of contemporary Dutch and Flemish printmakers, who popularised the depiction of everyday rural life. The inscription at the bottom, 'Morin fe. et Ex. Cum Priuil. Re.', indicates that the artist both created and published the work under royal privilege. This print offers a clear example of the technical standards of the period, where the balance between shadow and open space defines the mood of the composition. It remains a representative piece of seventeenth-century graphic art, demonstrating the capacity of the etching process to convey both structural form and atmospheric nuance.
