A detailed etching by Swiss artist Alexandre Calame, capturing a serene coastal scene with a prominent tree and atmospheric sky.
Alexandre Calame, a Swiss painter and printmaker, remains known for his depictions of the Alpine environment. This etching, titled Landscape Number 30, demonstrates his technical proficiency in capturing the atmospheric qualities of a coastal or lakeside scene. The composition centres on a large, gnarled tree that dominates the foreground, its textured bark and foliage rendered with precise, fine lines.
Behind the tree, the scene opens to a calm body of water under a sky filled with heavy, rolling clouds. A small boat sits near the shore, providing a sense of scale against the vastness of the natural surroundings. Calame employs a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the foliage to the lighter, ethereal quality of the sky, to create a sense of depth and mood. The work reflects the Romantic interest in the power and solitude of nature, a theme that occupied much of his career.
As a printmaker, Calame often produced series of works that allowed him to explore variations in light and weather. This particular piece shows his ability to balance the rugged details of the earth with the transient nature of the atmosphere. The etching process allows for a crispness in the depiction of branches and rocks, while the cross-hatching techniques provide the necessary volume to the clouds and the dense thicket. This print offers a view into the mid-nineteenth-century approach to graphic arts, where the focus remained on the observation of natural phenomena and the translation of these observations into a structured, monochromatic medium. It is a representative example of his output, showing the characteristic attention to form and light that defined his contribution to the Swiss school of painting.
