A traditional Chinese ink painting on silk by Zhai Dakun, featuring a mountainous landscape rendered in the style of the master Ching Hao.
This work by Zhai Dakun (d. 1804) represents the tradition of literati painting during the Qing Dynasty. The composition pays homage to the Five Dynasties period master Ching Hao, known for his monumental mountain forms and atmospheric depth. Zhai employs a restrained palette of ink washes on silk, creating a sense of distance through the subtle gradation of tone.
The scene depicts a mountainous terrain with a cluster of dwellings nestled at the base of a steep incline. Bare, gnarled trees occupy the foreground, their skeletal branches rendered with precise, calligraphic brushwork. The mountains rise in the background, their surfaces textured with light washes that suggest rocky formations and sparse vegetation. A calm body of water stretches across the left side of the frame, balancing the vertical mass of the peaks on the right.
In the upper left corner, an inscription provides context for the work, linking the artist to the stylistic lineage of his predecessors. The use of silk as a medium allows for a soft, muted appearance, characteristic of the period's preference for understated elegance. The brushwork is deliberate, focusing on the structural integrity of the forms rather than decorative detail.
