A traditional Chinese ink wash fan painting by Qian Du, featuring textured mountain forms and serene water, rendered in the literati style.
This work by Qian Du is a traditional Chinese fan painting executed in ink on paper. Qian Du, a scholar-painter active during the Qing Dynasty, is known for his adherence to the styles of the Yuan masters, particularly in his approach to brushwork and composition. The fan format presents specific challenges for the artist, requiring a curved composition that balances the heavy, textured rock formations on the left with the expansive, open water on the right.
The brushwork displays a controlled use of ink wash, where dry brush strokes define the craggy surfaces of the mountains, while lighter, diluted ink creates the atmospheric distance of the water and distant hills. Small, simplified structures are placed near the water's edge, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the natural environment. The composition follows the classic literati tradition, prioritising the expression of the artist's internal state through the depiction of nature rather than literal representation.
In the lower right corner, the artist has included a calligraphic inscription and a red seal, which are standard elements in traditional Chinese painting. These additions provide context regarding the date, the artist's intent, and the specific occasion for which the fan was created. The paper shows the characteristic folds of a folding fan, which have been integrated into the overall visual rhythm of the piece. This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink, preserving the delicate balance between the dark, dense foliage and the pale, empty spaces that suggest mist and air. The work reflects the refined aesthetic values of the scholar-official class during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, focusing on quiet contemplation and technical mastery.
