Description
A delicate etching by Auguste Delâtre, capturing a serene moonlit scene over water with atmospheric tonal depth.
Auguste Delâtre was a central figure in the nineteenth-century etching revival in France. Beyond his own artistic output, he operated a printing studio in Paris that collaborated with many of the era's most significant artists, including Charles Meryon and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. His technical mastery of the copper plate allowed for subtle tonal variations, which are evident in this nocturnal scene. This etching depicts a quiet body of water under a full moon. The composition relies on the contrast between the luminous orb of the moon and the dark, atmospheric sky. Delâtre uses fine, horizontal hatching to suggest the movement of clouds and the reflection of light upon the water's surface. A small boat occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, darkened environment. The distant shoreline is rendered with soft, blurred silhouettes of trees and structures, which recede into the gloom of the night. Delâtre's approach to the medium demonstrates a focus on mood and light rather than precise topographical detail. The print captures the stillness of the evening, utilising the inherent qualities of the etching process to create a sense of depth and shadow. By varying the pressure and the density of his lines, he achieves a range of greys that define the nocturnal atmosphere. This work reflects the broader interest among printmakers of the period in exploring the expressive potential of black and white imagery to convey specific times of day and environmental conditions. The print remains a clear example of the technical precision and atmospheric sensitivity that defined Delâtre's career as both a master printer and an independent artist.
