Armand Guillaumin painted this view of Pontgibaud during his travels through the Auvergne region of central France. Guillaumin was an original member of the Impressionist circle. He exhibited in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 alongside Monet and Pissarro. This work demonstrates his transition towards an expressive use of colour that preceded the Fauvist movement. The composition features a steep hillside with a winding path. Guillaumin uses a palette dominated by violet and ochre with deep greens. He won the state lottery in 1891. This financial independence allowed him to travel more freely and concentrate on painting without commercial pressure.
