J. E. H. MacDonald, a founding member of the Group of Seven, produced this study during his travels through the Canadian Rockies. The work captures the glacial waters of Lake McArthur, situated within Yoho National Park. MacDonald employs a direct, expressive application of paint, prioritising the raw character of the mountainous terrain over precise topographical detail. The composition is dominated by the contrast between the deep, turquoise water and the rugged, snow-dusted peaks that rise sharply in the background. MacDonald uses thick, rhythmic brushwork to define the geological forms, creating a sense of physical weight and permanence. The foreground is rendered with simplified shapes, drawing the eye across the shoreline to the reflective surface of the lake. His palette reflects the specific light conditions of high-altitude environments, utilising cool blues, stark whites, and earthy ochres to convey the atmosphere of the wilderness. This piece is characteristic of the artist's approach to the Canadian wilderness during the 1920s.
