Description
A modernist interpretation of the autumn season at Lake George, featuring simplified forms and a warm, autumnal colour palette.
Georgia O'Keeffe spent many summers at Lake George in upstate New York during the 1920s. This period provided the subject matter for a series of works that examine the relationship between the water, the surrounding hills, and the seasonal shifts of the forest. In this composition, O'Keeffe employs a simplified approach to form, reducing the natural elements to their essential shapes and colour fields.
The foreground is dominated by the foliage of autumn, rendered in warm tones of orange, yellow, and gold. These shapes are treated with a degree of abstraction, moving away from descriptive detail toward a focus on the rhythmic arrangement of colour. The middle ground features the deep blue expanse of the lake, which provides a cool contrast to the warmth of the trees. Beyond the water, the mountain rises in a soft, undulating silhouette against the sky.
O'Keeffe uses a flattened perspective to organise the scene into horizontal bands. This structural choice directs the viewer's attention to the interplay of colour and the balance of the composition. The paint application is smooth, allowing the forms to read clearly without the distraction of heavy brushwork. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist captures the essence of the season rather than a literal transcription of the location. This work reflects the broader modernist interest in distilling nature into its fundamental components, a practice that defined much of O'Keeffe's output during her time at the Stieglitz estate. The clarity of the light and the deliberate selection of the palette demonstrate her control over the medium, creating a sense of stillness that characterises her approach to the natural world.
