A 1896 portrait by Konstantin Somov, featuring a woman viewed through her own reflection in a mirror.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, painted this work in 1896. The composition focuses on a woman viewed from two angles: her profile in the foreground and her reflection in a mirror. This dual perspective allows the viewer to observe both the subject's features and her internal state. The woman wears a high-collared blouse with a dark tie and a large, elaborate hat adorned with light blue accents.
Somov employs a restrained palette, relying on muted tones to draw attention to the subject's expression. The brushwork is direct and confident, capturing the texture of the fabric and the soft light reflecting off the mirror surface. The painting reflects the artist's interest in psychological depth and the artifice of portraiture. By placing the subject before a mirror, Somov explores themes of self-perception and the divide between the public persona and the private self.
This piece is characteristic of Somov's early work, which often balanced realism with a subtle, melancholic atmosphere. The lack of background detail keeps the focus entirely on the figure, creating a sense of intimacy. The artist's technical skill is evident in the handling of the reflection, which maintains a distinct clarity while remaining integrated into the overall composition. This work provides a clear example of the aesthetic concerns prevalent among Russian artists at the turn of the twentieth century, who sought to move away from the rigid social realism of the previous generation toward a more subjective and decorative approach to painting.
