A 1949 abstract work by CoBrA founder Corneille, featuring a dense, calligraphic web of black lines over a textured, multi-coloured ground.

La tribu erre, painted in 1949, captures the raw energy associated with the CoBrA movement. Corneille, a founding member of this collective, rejected the rigid structures of traditional European art in favour of spontaneous, intuitive expression. This work reflects the group's interest in primitive art, children's drawings, and the uninhibited release of the subconscious mind. The composition is dominated by a dense network of black, calligraphic lines that weave across the surface. These marks act as both boundaries and conduits for the underlying colour. Beneath the chaotic web, patches of red, blue, yellow, and green emerge from a textured, greyish-white ground. The application of paint is thick and tactile, suggesting a physical engagement with the canvas that prioritises gesture over representation. While the title translates to 'The tribe wanders', the imagery remains largely non-representational. Instead of depicting figures, Corneille constructs a visual field where form and line exist in a state of constant flux. The work avoids the pursuit of balance or symmetry, opting for a restless, kinetic quality that draws the viewer into its internal rhythm. The grey border serves to contain the central activity, creating a tension between the structured frame and the wild, organic movement within. This piece is a clear example of the artist's early experimentation with automatic drawing and his move away from figurative constraints toward a more visceral, abstract language. It remains a significant record of the post-war European avant-garde, reflecting the desire of artists to rebuild visual culture from a position of primal simplicity and direct emotional honesty.
