A detailed eighteenth-century French etching depicting a humorous narrative scene of a stolen pair of boots, after a design by Jean-Baptiste Oudry.
This etching, titled La Rancune s'approprie une paire de bottes, captures a narrative scene typical of eighteenth-century French genre prints. The composition depicts a domestic interior where a theft has occurred. A man, startled in his bed, reacts to the discovery that his boots have been taken. The scene is rendered with the precise line work characteristic of Gabriel Huquier, a printmaker known for his reproductions of contemporary painters, including Jean-Baptiste Oudry, whose name appears on the plate as the original designer.
The narrative follows a specific moralising or humorous anecdote, common in the period. The text inscribed below the image explains the situation: a character named La Rancune, having noticed a stranger sleeping in the same room with his new boots, decides to take them. When the stranger wakes to find his footwear missing, the thief offers him a pair of worthless replacements, leading to a confrontation. The print functions as a visual representation of this social comedy, using the conventions of the time to convey character and setting.
Visually, the work employs a balanced use of light and shadow to define the figures and the draped bed canopy. The perspective is clear, drawing the eye from the foreground figures to the surprised man in the bed. Huquier uses varied hatching techniques to create texture on the clothing, the bed linens, and the wooden furniture. The inclusion of the descriptive text at the base is a standard feature of such prints, ensuring the viewer understands the specific story being told. This piece offers a glimpse into the social observations and artistic practices of the mid-eighteenth century, reflecting the period's interest in both narrative art and the technical refinement of the printmaking medium.
