Vincent van Gogh's 'La Mousmé', painted in 1888, reflects his fascination with Japanese art. The portrait features a young woman in vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes, capturing the essence of Japanese aesthetics through Van Gogh's unique style.
Painted in 1888, Vincent van Gogh's 'La Mousmé' is a portrait of a young Japanese woman. Van Gogh was fascinated by Japanese art and culture, which had a considerable influence on his work. He sought to capture the essence of Japanese prints, particularly in his use of colour and simplified forms. The term 'mousmé' was a contemporary French term for a young Japanese girl. Van Gogh found inspiration in Pierre Loti's novel 'Madame Chrysanthème', which told the story of a French naval officer's brief marriage to a Japanese girl. The painting depicts a seated young woman with dark hair and eyes. She wears a striped red and blue blouse and a blue skirt with orange polka dots. Her pose is relaxed, and she holds a small sprig of flowers. The background is a pale blue, which accentuates the colours of her clothing. Van Gogh's characteristic brushstrokes are evident throughout the painting, giving it a sense of movement and energy. The portrait is not just a likeness; it is an interpretation of Japanese aesthetics through Van Gogh's unique artistic vision.
