A detailed etching by Gaspard Duchange depicting a group of travellers resting in a serene, tree-lined pastoral setting.
This etching, titled La Meridienne, captures a quiet moment of rest within a rural setting. Gaspard Duchange, a skilled French engraver, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the varied line work used to define the foliage, the textured bark of the trees, and the soft folds of the figures' clothing. The composition is framed by two large, gnarled trees that guide the viewer's eye towards the distant village and the bridge crossing the stream.
In the foreground, a group of travellers and their horses pause for a midday break. The figures are rendered with a sense of relaxed posture, consistent with the pastoral themes popular in French art of the early eighteenth century. Duchange employs a range of hatching techniques to create depth, from the dense, dark lines in the shaded areas beneath the trees to the lighter, more open strokes that define the sunlit path and the distant hills. The scene evokes a sense of stillness, typical of the period's interest in idealised, harmonious depictions of rural life.
As a printmaker, Duchange was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the medium of engraving. This work reflects the conventions of the era, where the interplay between light and shadow serves to organise the visual space. The inclusion of architectural elements, such as the small stone bridge and the modest buildings, adds a layer of human presence to the natural environment. The print remains a fine example of the craftsmanship associated with French printmaking during the reign of Louis XIV and his successors, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time.
