A dynamic interpretation of the Fosse Dionne by Dutch artist Jacobien de Rooij, capturing the swirling movement and light of the famous karst spring.
Jacobien de Rooij, a Dutch artist born in 1959, presents a singular interpretation of the Fosse Dionne in Tonnerre, France. This site, a karst spring of significant historical and geological interest, serves as the subject for her exploration of water and light. The work captures the spring's circular basin, where the water appears to churn with a life of its own.
De Rooij employs a technique that emphasises the fluid movement of the water. The central pool is rendered in shades of turquoise, emerald, and deep blue, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the centre of the spring. The surface of the water is not static; rather, it is depicted with swirling, calligraphic strokes that suggest the constant upwelling of the subterranean source. The surrounding stone edges are treated with a more textured, linear approach, providing a contrast to the liquid centre.
The composition is dominated by the circular form of the spring, which occupies the majority of the frame. De Rooij uses a palette that leans heavily into cool tones, punctuated by flashes of yellow and white that represent the reflection of light on the water's surface. The application of media suggests a layering process, where marks are built up to create a sense of density and volume.
This piece avoids a literal representation of the site, opting instead for an atmospheric rendering that focuses on the physical sensation of the water. The artist's approach to the subject is one of observation combined with a subjective response to the environment. By focusing on the movement and colour of the spring, the work invites a contemplation of the natural forces at play within this ancient site. The result is a study of light and motion that captures the unique character of the Fosse Dionne.
