A fine nineteenth-century engraving by Raphael Morghen, reproducing the iconic portrait of La Fornarina attributed to the Renaissance master Raphael.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen reproduces the famous portrait attributed to the High Renaissance master Raphael. The subject, traditionally identified as Margherita Luti, known as La Fornarina, appears in a half-length pose. She wears a simple chemise and a fur wrap draped over her shoulder, her gaze directed towards the viewer with a calm, steady expression. Her hair is adorned with a delicate laurel wreath, a detail that adds a classical touch to the composition.
Morghen was a master of the burin, and his technical skill is evident in the subtle gradations of tone used to model the figure. The stippling and cross-hatching techniques create a soft, atmospheric quality, particularly in the background and the texture of the fur. The print includes a formal inscription at the base, complete with a coat of arms and dedication, which was common for high-quality reproductive prints of the period. This work demonstrates the nineteenth-century practice of disseminating famous paintings through fine engraving, allowing collectors to own high-quality reproductions of works held in major Italian collections.
The composition relies on the balance and clarity associated with the Renaissance style. The figure is placed against a dark, textured background, which pushes the subject forward and emphasises the soft lighting on her face and shoulders. The precision of the line work captures the gentle curves of the subject's features and the folds of her clothing. This print serves as an example of the high standards of printmaking in Italy during the early nineteenth century, where engravers sought to translate the painterly qualities of oil on canvas into the monochromatic medium of ink on paper. It remains a classic example of reproductive art, documenting a specific interpretation of one of the most debated portraits in art history.
