A dynamic abstract composition by Amy Sillman, featuring bold geometric forms and a layered, gestural application of oil paint.
Amy Sillman is a contemporary painter known for her approach to abstraction, which often incorporates elements of drawing, animation, and diagrammatic structure. In this work, titled L, the artist employs a method of layering and erasure that reveals the history of the painting process. The composition is anchored by a central, angular form that suggests a structural or architectural skeleton, yet it remains firmly within the realm of non-representational art. The colour palette is deliberate, contrasting muted grey backgrounds with blocks of saturated red, teal, and blue. Sillman uses heavy, gestural brushwork to define the edges of these shapes, creating a sense of tension between the flat surface of the canvas and the implied depth of the forms. The lines are not merely outlines: they function as active participants in the construction of the image, sometimes appearing to collapse or shift as the eye moves across the surface. Sillman often works through a process of addition and subtraction, where layers of paint are applied and then partially scraped away. This technique allows for a physical record of her decision-making to remain visible to the viewer. The resulting image possesses a sense of urgency and movement, avoiding static composition in favour of a dynamic, shifting arrangement. By balancing geometric rigour with fluid, painterly marks, Sillman creates a visual language that is both analytical and expressive. The work invites the viewer to engage with the materiality of the paint and the complexity of the spatial relationships established on the canvas.
