A detailed etching and watercolour by Noach van der Meer (II) depicting a Neoclassical decorative structure built for a 1795 Amsterdam celebration.
This work by Noach van der Meer (II) depicts a temporary decorative structure erected on the Noordermarkt in Amsterdam in 1795. The design reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic prevalent in late eighteenth-century Dutch civic celebrations. The composition features a central archway flanked by two rectangular panels, each containing a trophy-like arrangement of implements. Above the arch, a figure sits amidst clouds, holding a lyre, while a second figure, possibly representing Athena, occupies the central space below. The use of watercolour adds a delicate quality to the etched lines, defining the architectural elements and the allegorical figures with precision.
Van der Meer (II) was a member of a prominent family of Dutch engravers and artists. His work often documented the urban life and public events of Amsterdam. This specific piece serves as a record of the ephemeral architecture constructed for public festivities, which were common during this period of political transition in the Netherlands. The symmetry and the classical motifs, such as the columns and the allegorical figures, align with the period's interest in antiquity and civic order. The print provides a clear view of the decorative programme, showing how public spaces were transformed for ceremonial purposes. The muted colour palette, combined with the clean, thin lines of the etching, creates a balanced and orderly visual experience. It is a fine example of how graphic artists of the time captured the intersection of art, science, and public spectacle in the urban environment.
