A detailed etching by Joannes Bemme, capturing the character and texture of an elderly woman in profile.
This etching by the Dutch artist Joannes Bemme presents a study of an elderly woman, captured in profile with a focus on the textures of age and fabric. Bemme, active in the early nineteenth century, demonstrates a technical command of the etching needle, using cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the contours of the subject's face and the folds of her clothing. The woman wears a simple cap, a common element in the portraiture of the period, which frames her features and draws attention to the lines around her eyes and mouth.
The composition is intimate, focusing solely on the head and shoulders of the sitter. The background is rendered with dense, uniform hatching, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of depth. The light source appears to come from the upper left, casting subtle shadows that model the form of the face and the drape of the scarf around her neck. This work reflects the interest in character studies and the depiction of everyday people that persisted in Dutch art long after the Golden Age.
Bemme's approach to the medium is precise. He avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the character of the sitter to remain the primary subject. The print shows the influence of earlier Dutch masters who excelled in the depiction of light and texture through monochrome media. As a fine art print, this piece offers a glimpse into the observational practices of the era, where the study of human physiognomy was a standard exercise for the draughtsman and printmaker. The clarity of the lines and the balanced contrast make this an excellent example of nineteenth-century Dutch graphic work.
