A nineteenth-century albumen print by Adolphe Braun & Cie. depicting the Kloveniersburgwal canal in Amsterdam, featuring the Aluminiumbrug and Swygh Utrecht tower.
This albumen print captures a quiet stretch of the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the canal, the Aluminiumbrug, and the historic Swygh Utrecht tower. Adolphe Braun & Cie. were known for their technical precision in documenting European cityscapes and alpine scenery. The firm utilised the albumen process, which allowed for the fine detail visible in the brickwork of the canal houses and the reflection of the structures upon the water surface.
The image presents a static view of urban life, devoid of the bustle often associated with modern city photography. The light is diffused, typical of the Dutch climate, which softens the shadows cast by the drawbridge and the surrounding architecture. The framing of the print, presented here within its original decorative mount, reflects the nineteenth-century practice of treating photographs as collectible objects for albums or display. The perspective is carefully chosen to align the verticality of the tower with the horizontal lines of the canal and bridge, creating a balanced geometric arrangement.
Adolphe Braun, originally a textile designer, brought a disciplined eye to his photographic work. His firm produced extensive series of topographical views that were sold to tourists and collectors across Europe. This particular view of Amsterdam serves as a record of the city's infrastructure before the rapid urbanisation of the late nineteenth century. The clarity of the print allows for an examination of the construction of the bridge and the architectural details of the houses lining the canal. It remains a document of the period, capturing the atmosphere of the Dutch capital through the lens of early commercial photography.
