Description

A refined Shin-hanga woodblock print by Natori Shunsen, capturing the actor Kitaoka Nizaemon in his role as Wakasanosuke from the Chushingura narrative.

This woodblock print by Natori Shunsen depicts the actor Kitaoka Nizaemon in the role of Wakasanosuke, a character from the classic kabuki narrative Chushingura. Shunsen was a primary figure in the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques of shading and psychological depth while maintaining the technical rigour of the Edo period. The composition focuses on the actor in profile, a common convention in yakusha-e (actor prints) that allows for the clear delineation of facial features and expression. The subject wears a kamishimo, a formal samurai garment, rendered with a precise grid pattern that contrasts with the smooth, pale skin of the actor. The artist employs a subtle grey background, which draws attention to the subject's intense gaze and the sharp lines of his makeup. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Watanabe Print Shop, which collaborated with Shunsen to produce these high-quality actor portraits during the Taisho and Showa eras. Shunsen's approach to the actor portrait is distinct for its realism. Rather than idealising the performer, he captures the individual characteristics of the actor, providing a record of specific performances. The inclusion of the actor's crest on the shoulders of the garment adds a layer of authenticity to the depiction. This work is part of a larger series of actor portraits that documented the kabuki stage during a period of transition in Japanese theatre. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the early twentieth century, balancing the heritage of ukiyo-e with a modern sensibility regarding portraiture and character study.
