A fine example of Ottoman calligraphy by Sheikh Hamdullah, featuring precise Thuluth and Naskh scripts framed by decorative floral illumination.
This work is a fine example of a kıta, a specific format of Ottoman calligraphy designed for study or display. Sheikh Hamdullah, a master of the Ottoman tradition, refined the scripts used in this piece, particularly the Thuluth and Naskh styles. The composition displays a hierarchical arrangement of text, where larger, bolder characters occupy the upper and lower panels, while smaller, more densely packed lines fill the central section. This structure allows the viewer to appreciate both the grand scale of the primary script and the technical precision required for the smaller, secondary text.
The aesthetic quality of the piece relies on the balance between the ink work and the surrounding illumination. The central panel is framed by decorative motifs, featuring floral patterns rendered in blue and gold. These elements provide a visual anchor for the text, creating a sense of order within the page. The paper itself is treated with a subtle, aged tone, which complements the dark ink and the metallic lustre of the gold leaf.
Sheikh Hamdullah is credited with bringing a new sense of proportion and grace to the Ottoman calligraphic canon. His approach moved away from the rigid styles of his predecessors, favouring a more fluid, balanced form. This kıta demonstrates his ability to integrate text and ornament into a unified whole. The precision of the pen strokes, particularly in the sweeping curves of the Thuluth script, reveals the high level of training and discipline inherent in this craft. As a museum-grade print, this reproduction captures the texture of the original paper and the delicate application of gold, offering a clear view of the master's hand.
