A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga featuring the legendary Kintarō overseeing four demons as they draw lots.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga depicts the legendary figure Kintarō, the Golden Boy of Japanese folklore, interacting with four demons. Kintarō is known for his immense strength and his upbringing in the mountains, where he befriended various animals and supernatural beings. In this composition, the artist captures a moment of playful authority as the boy oversees the demons drawing lots, a scene that balances the fantastical nature of the subjects with the characteristic clarity of Kiyonaga's style.
Kiyonaga was a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, particularly noted for his tall, graceful figures and his ability to arrange complex groups within a composition. His work often moved away from the more crowded, claustrophobic scenes of his predecessors, opting instead for open, airy spaces that allow the viewer to focus on the interaction between the characters. The figures here are rendered with clean, confident lines, and the colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones to define the forms of the demons and the robust physique of Kintarō. The patterned robe worn by the boy adds a decorative element that contrasts with the more chaotic, textured appearance of the demons.
As a printmaker, Kiyonaga helped define the aesthetic of the late eighteenth century in Edo. His approach to figure drawing, which often featured elongated proportions, influenced many of his contemporaries. This specific work demonstrates his skill in narrative illustration, where the mythological subject matter is treated with a sense of grounded reality. The print serves as an example of the technical precision achieved by Ukiyo-e artists, who worked in collaboration with carvers and printers to produce these refined images. The composition remains balanced despite the disparate sizes and shapes of the five figures, demonstrating the artist's command over spatial organisation.
