A masterful Flemish Baroque portrait by Jacob Jordaens, depicting a scene from the myth of King Candaules with dramatic lighting and rich textures.
This work by Jacob Jordaens depicts a moment from the classical narrative of King Candaules of Lydia, who arranged for his bodyguard, Gyges, to observe his wife in her private quarters. The composition focuses on the queen, captured in a moment of transition as she prepares for bed. Jordaens employs the characteristic chiaroscuro of the Flemish Baroque, using deep shadows to contrast with the luminous, pale skin of the subject. The heavy, crimson drapery behind her provides a theatrical backdrop, drawing the eye toward her turned posture and the delicate lace of her head covering.
Jordaens, a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrates his mastery of texture and light in this piece. The rendering of the pearls, the translucent fabric of the veil, and the soft flesh tones reflects the technical precision common in his studio practice. Unlike the more restrained compositions of his Italian counterparts, this work possesses a physical presence and a sense of immediacy. The queen looks back over her shoulder, her expression caught between composure and the vulnerability of the situation. The painting avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the focus to remain on the human form and the dramatic interplay of light. By isolating the figure against the dark, rich background, Jordaens creates a sense of intimacy that invites the viewer to consider the narrative tension inherent in the myth. This print captures the subtle gradations of colour and the tactile quality of the original oil painting, providing a clear view of the artist's brushwork and his approach to light.
