A detailed eighteenth-century Dutch etching depicting a family singing an evening hymn together at a home organ.
This etching, titled 'Kinderen met hun vader en moeder zingen bij een orgel' (Children with their father and mother singing at an organ), captures a domestic scene typical of late eighteenth-century Dutch print culture. The composition depicts a family gathered around a small organ, engaged in the performance of 'Het Avond-Lied' (The Evening Song). The mother sits at the keys, illuminated by two candles, while the father and children stand or sit nearby, holding songbooks. The scene reflects the period's emphasis on domestic piety and the role of music in the education and moral development of children.
The print is executed with precise, fine lines characteristic of the engraving techniques of the era. The artist, B. de Bakker, employs a clear, balanced composition that directs the viewer's eye to the central musical activity. The inclusion of the text below the image provides the opening lines of the evening hymn, which speaks of the sun setting in purple-red and the descent into a soft lap to find sweet rest. This integration of text and image was common in Dutch pedagogical and devotional books of the time, where visual aids accompanied moralising poetry or songs.
The figures are dressed in the fashion of the late eighteenth century, with the mother wearing a cap and the children in period attire. The lighting, provided by the candles, creates soft shadows against the wall, adding a sense of depth to the interior space. This work offers a glimpse into the private lives of Dutch families during the Enlightenment, where the home functioned as a centre for cultural and religious instruction. The print remains a fine example of the illustrative work produced for Dutch literature and songbooks, maintaining a focus on clarity, order, and the quietude of family life.
