A vintage gelatin silver print by Théodore van Lelyveld, depicting a narrow, sun-drenched alleyway beneath the citadel of Corté, Corsica.
This gelatin silver print by Théodore van Lelyveld captures a narrow, shadowed alleyway situated beneath the imposing citadel of Corté on the island of Corsica. The composition is defined by the stark contrast between the sun-drenched stone walls and the deep, cavernous shadows that obscure the lower reaches of the passage. Two small figures stand near the centre of the frame, providing a sense of scale to the rugged, vertical architecture that dominates the scene.
Van Lelyveld, a Dutch photographer and ethnographer, frequently travelled to document the customs and environments of various regions. His approach to this subject reflects an interest in the vernacular architecture of the Mediterranean. The image is presented here as it appears in its original archival context, mounted on a grid-lined page, which preserves the historical nature of the photograph as a record of travel and observation. The texture of the stone, the rough-hewn wooden balcony projecting from the right-hand wall, and the uneven ground all contribute to a tactile representation of the Corsican town at the turn of the twentieth century.
Unlike staged studio portraits of the era, this work functions as a candid observation of daily life within a specific geographical setting. The steep angle of the alleyway and the looming presence of the citadel above suggest the defensive and historical character of Corté. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, the photographer creates a sense of atmosphere that transcends simple documentation. This print offers a glimpse into the past, capturing a quiet moment in a remote European location, far removed from the rapid industrialisation occurring elsewhere in the world during this period.
