A delicate woodblock print of two rabbits from the 1827 Kihō gafu by Shijō school artist Kawamura Kihō.
This woodblock print originates from the Kihō gafu, a collection of sketches published in 1827 by the Kyoto-based artist Kawamura Kihō. Kihō was a student of the Shijō school, a movement that prioritised direct observation of nature and a more naturalistic approach to traditional Japanese painting. The Shijō style is characterised by its soft brushwork and a focus on the essential qualities of the subject, moving away from the rigid formalities of earlier academic schools.
The image depicts two rabbits, rendered with a focus on texture and form. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to suggest the softness of the fur, while the composition spans two pages of the album. This format allows for a sense of movement and interaction between the two animals, despite the physical divide of the book binding. The use of minimal colour, restricted to the subtle pink of the rabbit's eye and the muted tones of the ink, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, where restraint was often considered a mark of quality.
Kawamura Kihō was known for his ability to capture the character of animals through simple, yet precise, observation. His work in the Kihō gafu serves as a record of the artistic techniques prevalent in early nineteenth-century Japan.
