Description
Kettleness in North Yorkshire occupies a coast shaped by alum quarrying, where pale cliffs and broad rock shelves overlook a blue bay beyond slopes of grass and low scrub.
The small coastal hamlet of Kettleness stands near Runswick Bay, north-west of Whitby. Alum extraction altered the headland, and a major landslip in 1829 destroyed the original village, after which houses were rebuilt further inland from the unstable shore.
From high green ground, the view drops towards a pale platform of exposed rock. Narrow white waves curve around its seaward edge, with shallow channels reflecting the blue sky. Cream cliff faces interrupt the darker vegetation on the right. Rust-coloured scrub mixes with green grass in the foreground, suggesting late summer or early autumn beneath a wide, lightly clouded sky.
