This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Kawasaki, a stop on the Tokaido road connecting Edo and Kyoto. It belongs to the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, a variation of his famous earlier work that incorporates kyoka, or comic verse, into the composition. The print captures the Rokugo Ferry crossing, a common site for travellers navigating the river.

Hiroshige organises the scene with a clear foreground, middle ground, and background. In the foreground, figures walk along the riverbank near a small teahouse. The middle ground features the expanse of the river, where a sailboat with a single white sail glides across the water, accompanied by smaller ferry boats carrying passengers. The background is defined by the distant shoreline and trees, rendered with the characteristic flat colour blocks of the Ukiyo-e tradition.

The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper section balances the visual weight of the trees on the left. The artist uses a controlled palette of blues, greens, and soft ochres to represent the water and the rural environment. The lines are precise, defining the architecture of the teahouse and the silhouettes of the travellers. This work reflects the popularity of travel prints during the Edo period, which allowed urban residents to experience the geography of Japan through the eyes of a master printmaker. The composition avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the atmosphere of the river crossing and the daily life of those moving along the Tokaido route.
