A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting Kato Kiyomasa hunting tigers during the Imjin War. This triptych captures a dramatic scene with strong lines and bold colours, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e style.
This triptych woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) depicts a scene from the Imjin War (1592-1598), specifically Kato Kiyomasa's tiger hunt in Korea. Yoshitoshi was a prominent Japanese print artist of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his innovative and often dramatic depictions of historical and legendary subjects. His work bridges traditional Ukiyo-e techniques with modern sensibilities. The print is composed of three vertical panels. The left panel shows tigers near a body of water, with soldiers in the background. The central panel features a samurai, presumably Kato Kiyomasa, engaged in combat with a tiger. The right panel shows additional samurai warriors in a wooded area. The print uses strong lines and blocks of colour to create a dynamic and visually arresting composition. The scene is rendered with a sense of action and intensity, characteristic of Yoshitoshi's style.
