A serene woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicting the Floating Hall at Katada during a winter snowfall, rendered in the atmospheric Shin-hanga style.
This woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicts the Ukimidō, or Floating Hall, at Katada. It forms part of the artist's series titled Eight Views of Lake Biwa, a traditional subject in Japanese art that Shinsui reinterpreted through the lens of the Shin-hanga movement. The Shin-hanga style sought to revitalise traditional woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective while maintaining the collaborative production method of the Edo period.
The composition focuses on the temple hall, which appears to hover above the water on its wooden pilings. Shinsui employs a muted colour palette to convey the stillness of a winter evening. The heavy snowfall is rendered with white flecks against a deep blue sky, creating a sense of quiet isolation. The snow-laden pine branch in the upper left corner provides a frame for the scene, drawing the eye towards the architectural details of the hall. The reeds in the foreground add texture and depth, contrasting with the smooth, icy surface of the lake.
Shinsui was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and became a leading figure in the twentieth-century print revival. His work often explores the interplay between nature and human structures. In this print, the artist captures the specific mood of the Katada site during a snowstorm. The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the carvers and printers who worked with Shinsui to achieve the subtle gradations of colour in the water and sky. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic concerns of the early Taishō period, where traditional motifs were adapted to suit a modern sensibility. The print remains a representative example of how the Shin-hanga movement balanced technical mastery with evocative, atmospheric storytelling.
