A sombre, expressionist oil painting by Henk Weijzig, documenting the harsh realities of life within the Changi prisoner-of-war camp.
Kamp Changi is a stark, haunting oil painting by Dutch artist Henk Weijzig, created during his internment in the Changi prisoner-of-war camp in Singapore. The work depicts three emaciated figures lying in a row, their bodies reduced to skeletal forms under thin, dark coverings. The composition is deliberately flat, focusing the viewer on the physical toll of captivity. Weijzig employs a muted, monochromatic palette of greys, deep blues, and pale ochres, which reinforces the grim reality of the environment.
The figures are arranged horizontally, their heads resting on simple, block-like pillows. The expressions on their faces are hollow, conveying a sense of exhaustion and resignation. A small, simple bowl sits in the foreground, a detail that serves as a reminder of the scarcity and deprivation experienced by the prisoners. The brushwork is direct and unadorned, reflecting the urgency and limited resources available to the artist during his time in the camp.
This piece functions as a historical record of the conditions faced by Allied prisoners in the Pacific theatre. Weijzig, who was a professional artist before the war, continued to document his surroundings despite the severe constraints of his situation. The painting avoids sentimentality, choosing instead to present the harsh truth of the human condition under extreme duress. It is a sombre work that captures a specific moment of twentieth-century history through a personal, observational lens. The lack of background detail keeps the focus entirely on the subjects, creating an intimate yet detached perspective on the suffering of those interned at Changi. This print offers a clear reproduction of the original canvas, preserving the texture and tonal range of Weijzig's wartime observations.
