Description
A 1893 woodcut calendar page by Dutch artist Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, featuring bold graphic lines and organic floral motifs.
This woodcut by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, titled Kalenderblad 1893, reflects the transition toward modern graphic design in the Netherlands during the late nineteenth century. Lion Cachet, a figure in the Dutch decorative arts, utilised the woodcut medium to create a functional yet highly stylised calendar page for the printing house De Meerbode in Aalsmeer. The composition is divided into distinct zones, balancing typographic elements with organic, flowing forms. The upper section features a decorative header containing the name of the printing firm, framed by stylised, almost zoomorphic motifs. A large, central lily dominates the lower right quadrant, rendered with bold, rhythmic lines that capture the essence of the flower rather than its exact botanical likeness. The surrounding border consists of repetitive, hatched patterns that provide a sense of structure to the page. The work demonstrates the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly in the emphasis on the physical process of woodblock printing and the integration of text and image. Lion Cachet was known for his interest in the material qualities of his medium. In this piece, the contrast between the dark, ink-heavy areas and the stark white of the paper creates a graphic tension. The work serves as a record of commercial printing practices in the 1890s, where the artist acted as both designer and craftsman. The inclusion of specific sections for Christian and Jewish holidays indicates the intended public use of the calendar. This print offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the period, where the discipline of the grid met the fluid, decorative impulses of the emerging Art Nouveau style.
