A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers crossing a bridge at Kakegawa. Part of his famous Tōkaidō series, it features Mount Akiba in the distance.
This woodblock print is the twenty-seventh station in Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. It depicts the station of Kakegawa in Shizuoka Prefecture. The composition focuses on a high, arched wooden bridge crossing a river. Travellers move across the structure, including a priest in a large straw hat and several figures carrying bundles. A small child runs ahead of the group, looking up at a kite flying high in the sky. The background features the silhouette of Mount Akiba. This mountain was a popular pilgrimage site during the Edo period, known for its shrine dedicated to protection against fire. Hiroshige uses a muted colour palette of earthy browns, soft greys, and pale blues. The sky transitions from a light cream to a deeper blue at the top edge, a technique known as bokashi. This gradation adds atmospheric depth to the scene without the use of Western linear perspective. In the middle ground, labourers work in flooded rice paddies. The fine lines of the reeds and the rhythmic placement of the figures create a sense of daily life along the famous coastal road. The kite string provides a sharp diagonal element that connects the foreground figures to the open sky. This specific impression includes a decorative border and English text at the bottom, indicating it was likely produced for the export market or as part of a later commemorative edition. Hiroshige was a master of capturing weather and atmosphere, and this work demonstrates his ability to blend human activity with the natural environment.
