This woodblock print is a section from the series A Harimaze Mirror of Joruri Plays, produced by the master Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The term harimaze refers to a format where multiple distinct images are printed on a single large sheet, intended to be cut apart by the purchaser. This specific fragment depicts a group of birds in flight against a muted, atmospheric background, positioned above a structural architectural element.
Kuniyoshi is recognised for his technical skill and his ability to capture movement within the constraints of the woodblock medium. The composition balances the dynamic, angular forms of the birds with the rigid, geometric lines of the roof structure at the base. The colour palette is restrained, relying on subtle gradients of grey and deep blue to suggest the time of day or weather conditions. The inclusion of traditional Japanese calligraphy along the right margin provides a graphic counterpoint to the naturalistic subject matter.
As a representative example of late Edo-period printmaking, this work demonstrates the artist's interest in both narrative themes and observational studies. The print reflects the aesthetic preferences of the time, where the juxtaposition of text and image was a common feature in popular graphic arts.
