A detailed woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya capturing a dramatic moment from a kabuki performance with four named characters.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya depicts a dramatic scene from a kabuki performance. The composition is divided into two distinct zones, separating the seated figures on the raised dais from the active, standing actor in the foreground. The artist uses bold outlines and a clear colour palette to define the elaborate costumes worn by the performers, who are identified by name in the cartouches.
The central figure on the dais, Tairano Shinnō Masakado, commands the space with a stern expression, while the foreground actor strikes a dynamic pose, holding a sword aloft. The background features architectural elements typical of a theatre stage, including sliding screens decorated with horse motifs. Yoshitsuya, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was known for his mastery of warrior prints and theatrical subjects. His work captures the tension and artifice of the Edo-period stage, where actors were often treated as celebrities and their performances were documented through these mass-produced prints.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition, with carefully registered colour blocks creating a flat yet highly structured visual field. The use of specific patterns on the garments, such as the circular crane motifs on the foreground actor's robe, adds visual texture to the scene. This work provides a window into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the intersection of history, legend, and popular entertainment informed the output of the print studios. The print remains a clear example of the collaborative process between the artist, the carver, and the printer, resulting in a balanced composition that conveys the energy of a live performance.
