A fine Neoclassical engraving by Raphael Morghen depicting the allegorical figure of Justice, based on the compositions of Raphael Sanzio.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the allegorical figure of Justice, seated upon clouds and surrounded by four putti. The central figure holds a sword aloft in her right hand and a pair of scales in her left, traditional symbols of judicial authority and balance. The putti hold tablets inscribed with Latin text, referencing the legal principles of the Roman tradition. The composition is circular, a format often utilised in printmaking to focus the viewer on the central narrative.
Morghen was a master of the burin, known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of Renaissance masters into the medium of engraving. This work is based on the compositions of Raphael Sanzio, specifically the figures found in the Stanza della Segnatura within the Vatican. The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century Italian printmaking, where cross-hatching and stippling are employed to create depth and volume in the drapery and the soft forms of the putti.
The print reflects the Neoclassical interest in classical iconography and the revival of Renaissance ideals. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the clarity of the line work align with the aesthetic values of the period, which prioritised order and proportion. Morghen's work was highly regarded during his lifetime for its fidelity to the original paintings, allowing these complex allegorical scenes to reach a wider audience beyond the confines of the Vatican. The print serves as a fine example of the reproductive engraving tradition, where the engraver acted as both a technician and an interpreter of historical art. The monochromatic palette emphasises the sculptural quality of the figures, drawing attention to the anatomical precision and the rhythmic flow of the fabric.
