A fine Neoclassical engraving by Benoit Louis Henriquez depicting the mythological encounter between Jupiter and Callisto.
This engraving by Benoit Louis Henriquez depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the moment Jupiter approaches the nymph Callisto while disguised as the goddess Diana. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common format for eighteenth-century French prints. Henriquez, a skilled engraver, translates the painterly qualities of the original design into a monochromatic medium through precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques.
The figures are rendered with the anatomical clarity associated with the Neoclassical period. Jupiter, in his guise, leans towards Callisto, who looks up with an expression of recognition or surprise. To the left, the eagle, a traditional attribute of Jupiter, serves as a subtle indicator of the god's true identity. The background features a wooded setting, providing a sense of depth and atmosphere through varied line density. The drapery of the figures is handled with attention to the fall of fabric, creating a sense of volume and movement.
Henriquez was active in Paris during a period when reproductive printmaking was a primary method for disseminating compositions by contemporary painters. This work demonstrates the technical rigour required to capture the nuances of light and shadow without the use of colour. The inscription at the base indicates the print was registered at the Bibliothèque Nationale, reflecting the formal distribution channels of the era. The print remains a record of the period's fascination with classical mythology and the technical proficiency of French printmakers in the early nineteenth century.
