A classical mythological study by Pieter Isaacsz. depicting the encounter between Jupiter and Antiope, rendered in pen and brown wash.
This drawing by Pieter Isaacsz. depicts the classical myth of Jupiter, who has assumed the form of a satyr to approach the sleeping Antiope. The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures, with the satyr reaching out to uncover the reclining woman. Isaacsz. employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the forms, supplemented by brown wash to establish volume and shadow. The artist's technique reveals a clear understanding of the human figure, typical of the period's interest in classical themes and narrative drama.
Isaacsz. was a painter and draughtsman active in Amsterdam and Denmark. His work often reflects the influence of the Haarlem Mannerists, particularly in the treatment of the nude and the theatrical arrangement of the scene. The drawing demonstrates a high degree of technical control, with the wash applied to create a sense of depth within the interior setting. The presence of a small, secondary figure to the right adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, suggesting a broader mythological context. This piece provides a view into the preparatory methods of a Dutch artist working at the turn of the seventeenth century, where ink and wash studies were essential for developing larger compositions. The monochromatic palette emphasises the draughtsmanship, allowing the viewer to appreciate the artist's handling of light and form without the distraction of colour. It is a representative example of the period's fascination with Ovidian tales, rendered with a focus on gesture and anatomical precision.
