A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone, depicting Juno and Mars within an elaborate, decorative architectural frame.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a mythological scene featuring Juno and Mars, framed within a highly decorative architectural border. Bonasone, a Bolognese painter and engraver, was active during the mid-sixteenth century and is recognised for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. The central composition shows Juno seated with a child, while Mars stands to the right, holding a spear. The figures are rendered with the classical proportions typical of the period, reflecting the influence of contemporary Roman art.
The work is notable for its elaborate framing, which includes grotesque masks, swags of fruit, and flanking animal figures. These elements demonstrate the artist's interest in the ornamental vocabulary of the Italian Renaissance. Below the figures, a cartouche contains an Italian inscription that provides context for the mythological narrative, linking the figures to the complex genealogies of the gods. The print exhibits the fine, controlled line work characteristic of Bonasone's mature style, where cross-hatching is employed to create depth and volume in the drapery and musculature.
Bonasone often reproduced the works of other masters, yet this piece demonstrates his own capacity for invention, as indicated by the 'I. Bonasone invenit' signature on the cartouche. The print serves as an example of the dissemination of classical themes through the medium of engraving, which allowed such imagery to circulate among collectors and artists across Europe. The balance between the central narrative and the surrounding decorative motifs creates a structured, harmonious visual experience. The print remains a clear representation of the Mannerist interest in combining classical subject matter with sophisticated, ornamental graphic design.
