A detailed 18th-century engraving by Pietro Monaco, reproducing a Baroque painting of the biblical heroine Judith.
This print by Pietro Monaco reproduces a composition by the German Baroque painter Jan Lys. The scene depicts the biblical narrative of Judith, who has successfully assassinated the Assyrian general Holofernes to save her people. Monaco, a Venetian printmaker, was known for his series of engravings that documented the collections of noble families in Venice, such as the Vidiman family mentioned in the inscription at the base of the plate.
The visual composition captures the immediate aftermath of the act. Judith is shown from behind, her body turned to reveal her profile as she holds the severed head of Holofernes. The drapery of her sleeves and the heavy fabric of the tent create a sense of movement and tension. Monaco employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the fallen general and the soft textures of Judith's garments. The lighting is dramatic, characteristic of the Baroque style, with deep shadows that heighten the gravity of the subject matter.
Monaco's work serves as a record of the original painting by Jan Lys, which was held in the Vidiman collection during the eighteenth century. The inclusion of the Latin inscription and the attribution to the original painter provides historical context for the print's creation. The technical precision of the engraving allows for a clear translation of the painterly qualities of the original work into a monochrome medium. This print is an example of the eighteenth-century practice of reproducing famous paintings through printmaking to disseminate art to a wider audience. The composition remains focused on the central figures, avoiding unnecessary background detail to keep the viewer's attention on the narrative action.
