A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Abraham Bloteling, depicting the biblical heroine Judith after a design by Raphael.
This engraving by Abraham Bloteling depicts the biblical figure of Judith, who is shown standing over the severed head of the Assyrian general Holofernes. The composition is derived from an original design by Raphael, as indicated by the inscription 'Rafael Urbin pinx' at the bottom left. Bloteling, a Dutch engraver known for his technical precision, employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the drapery, the stone wall, and the distant, rolling hills.
Judith is positioned in a contrapposto stance, leaning against a masonry wall. Her expression is calm, contrasting with the violent nature of the narrative. The sword she holds is rendered with sharp, clean lines, while the shading on her garments creates a sense of volume and weight. The background features a simplified, atmospheric view of a town, which provides a sense of scale and distance. The print captures the transition of Renaissance compositional ideals into the printmaking traditions of the seventeenth-century Netherlands.
Bloteling was instrumental in the development of mezzotint, though this work demonstrates his mastery of traditional line engraving. The clarity of the lines and the balanced distribution of light and shadow reflect the high standards of Dutch print production during this period. The work serves as a record of how Renaissance imagery was disseminated and reinterpreted by Northern European printmakers. The inclusion of the artist's name and the publisher's mark at the base of the print follows the standard conventions of the era, identifying the collaborative nature of print production where a painter's design was translated into a reproducible medium by a skilled engraver.
