A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Peter Lutz, depicting the biblical heroine Judith with technical precision and formal composure.
This engraving by Peter Lutz depicts the biblical figure of Judith, a subject frequently explored in European art for its dramatic narrative potential. Lutz, a German engraver active during the mid-nineteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in this monochrome work. The composition focuses on the figure of Judith, who stands with a composed expression, her hand resting upon the hilt of a sword. The severed head of Holofernes is partially visible at the lower left, providing the necessary context for the narrative without dominating the visual space.
The artist employs a range of tonal values to define the textures of the subject. The fabric of her garment is rendered with delicate lines, capturing the folds of the lighter material against the more heavily patterned, embroidered apron. The shading around the figure creates a subtle sense of volume, while the background remains neutral to ensure the focus stays on the subject. Lutz utilises the traditional techniques of the period, prioritising clarity of form and anatomical accuracy. The work reflects the conventions of nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver aimed to translate the qualities of a painted original into a refined graphic medium.
Judith is portrayed here not as a figure of overt violence, but as a composed individual following a decisive act. The balance of the composition, with the vertical line of the sword acting as a stabilising element, contributes to the formal quality of the print. This piece offers an example of the mid-nineteenth-century approach to historical and religious subjects, where the emphasis is placed on the psychological state of the protagonist. The print is a study in monochromatic control, demonstrating the capacity of the engraving process to convey depth and material detail through line work alone.
